ASSIGNMENT #4

In the first parts of Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam is portrayed as a broken wife who lived unhappily. In chapter 27, Mariam couldn't find it in her to inspire Laila to progress, because she couldn't move forward either. "The girl (Laila) was looking back at Mariam to pass on wisdom, to say something encouraging. But what wisdom did Mariam have to offer? What encouragement?" With the use of textual evidence, explain how Mariam's attitude and persona change from beginning to end.

  1. As a young child, Mariam was raised in society were a person like her would be known as a “clumsy little harami”, a bastard child, and a “stupid girl”. Being that she only knew of certain things, her attitude was of a naive girl wanting to know more of the world and herself. Later in the novel, Mariam sees how abusive Rasheed is to Laila. She reached her boiling point and she “burst through the front door...” “grabbed a shovel...” and swung at him. This shows that Mariam was once insecure about her ways but later on discovers she has been living an unrealistic life and becomes courageous when saving the life of Laila. This was the first time that she was “deciding the course of her own life".
